Indispensable

When the noise of a startup-obsessed world becomes unbearable, one scientist confronts the question they've been avoiding — Can I do better? — and chooses to build something real. Without compromise. Without permission.

Director’s note

Indispensable is the first scripted short film from Fifty Years. We made this as a creative intervention — not a corporate video, not a brand film in a traditional sense — but a piece of cinema designed to make visible a question that doesn't get asked enough in public: in a world drowning in AI hype, what's actually worth building?

The opening satirical sequence was produced using a combination of virtual studio production, generative AI imagery, and VFX — deliberately rendered in the slick, overproduced style of the startup announcements it parodies. The main body of the film is the opposite: single-camera drama, shot on location with available light, vintage lenses, and long silences.

VC has been turning storytelling into infrastructure. A24 aesthetics on funding announcement videos, VC podcasts, in-house studios, launches produced like cultural events. But that’s not always a good thing. It's a for-profit legitimacy machine and lately it's been pointed at some extremely suspect things. "Prediction markets" that are really just online casinos. AI fake-influencer startups built to deceive people. It’s been painful to watch.

Indispensable is our response.

The film features real scientist-founders from the Fifty Years portfolio breaking the fourth wall alongside scripted performances, blurring the line between fiction and documentary. It was shot across five days in London and the US in March 2026.

Our goal’s not to tell anyone what to build. It’s to restore agency and ambition — in a time when the tools to create a better future are more available than ever. So: what will you build?
